Washington, D.C., July 10, 2013
– The Lincoln Memorial University College of Veterinary Medicine (LMU-CVM) in Harrogate, Tenn., has become the 30th U.S. college or school of veterinary medicine to become a member of the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC).
Veterinary colleges and schools must be accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association’s (AVMA) Council on Education (COE) to become voting members of the AAVMC. LMU-CVM has cleared the first step in the accreditation process with a Letter of Reasonable Assurance from the American Veterinary Medical Association’s (AVMA) Council on Education.
As a benefit of membership, LMU-CVM will join the 37 schools that use the AAVMC’s centralized Veterinary Medical College Application Service (VMCAS). Aspiring veterinary medical students use the AAVMC’s application service to apply to most of the veterinary medical schools that are accredited by the AVMA.
“The AAVMC is pleased to welcome the Lincoln Memorial University College of Veterinary Medicine to our association,” said AAVMC Executive Director Dr. Andrew Maccabe. “Besides participation in VMCAS, our members benefit from activities that advance academic veterinary medicine through communication, advocacy, the dissemination of data and research, and collective participation in meetings and symposia that are organized for the purpose of advancing our members’ mutual goals as well as society’s continually changing need for veterinary expertise.”
LMU-CVM is currently recruiting students for its inaugural class, which will begin in fall 2014.
The AAVMC is a nonprofit membership organization working to protect and improve the health and welfare of animals, people and the environment by advancing academic veterinary medicine. Its members include all 35 veterinary medical colleges in the United States and Canada, nine departments of veterinary science, eight departments of comparative medicine, fourteen international colleges of veterinary medicine, and three affiliate colleges of veterinary medicine.
