University of Calgary

The University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM) was established in 2005 to meet Alberta’s need for highly skilled veterinary graduates supporting rural Alberta, production animal and equine industries, animal and human health research, and public health.

UCVM offers the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program, supervision leading to graduate degrees (MSc, PhD) in Veterinary Medical Sciences, and advanced clinical training programs (internships, fellowships, and residencies). UCVM is also committed to professional development programs for the veterinary community.

UCVM’s educational model has at its core preparation for rural community practice and its four areas of emphasis:  production animal health, equine health, ecosystem and public health, and investigative medicine.  The integrated core-elective program provides a veterinary sciences education that prepares students for all career pathways.

The clinical and professional educational programs are delivered in collaboration with Alberta’s veterinary community.  The Distributed Veterinary Learning Community (DVLC) is a partnership comprised of private practices, government and non-governmental organizations, and animal health and industry organizations. The fourth year practicum program takes place predominantly in the DVLC.

UCVM has research programs across the range of veterinary and comparative biomedical sciences. Areas of strength include cattle health, disease ecology, infectious diseases, pain and animal welfare, equine health, reproduction and regenerative medicine, and veterinary education.

In 2015, UCVM has approximately 70 faculty members, 125 DVM students, 12 advanced clinical trainees, and 100 graduate students.
