St. George's University Joins Schools Using the Veterinary Medical College Application Service (VMCAS)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 17, 2012

Washington, D.C. –
The School of Veterinary Medicine at St. George’s University on the island of Grenada in the West Indies achieved full membership in the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) this past year and, as a benefit of membership, will join the 34 schools that use the AAVMC’s centralized Veterinary Medical College Application Service (VMCAS).

The AAVMC is a nonprofit membership organization working to protect and improve the health and welfare of animals, people and the environment by advancing academic veterinary medicine. Its members include all 33 veterinary medical colleges in the United States and Canada, nine departments of veterinary science, eight departments of comparative medicine, three veterinary medical education institutions, eleven international colleges of veterinary medicine, and two affiliate international colleges of veterinary medicine.

Aspiring veterinary medical students use the AAVMC’s application service to apply to most veterinary medical schools that are accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association, including 25 of 28 U.S. schools, two schools in Canada, two in Scotland, and one school each in England, Ireland, Australia, Grenada, and New Zealand. VMCAS collects, processes, and submits application materials to the veterinary medical schools and responds to inquiries about the application process from applicants, advisors, parents, and schools. The system also has electronic evaluation and submission capability and serves as a social media hub via Facebook where applicants can ask questions, interact, and obtain updates.

“Together, AAVMC member schools can have a greater impact than they do alone, and VMCAS is a vital tool for expediting and enhancing enrollment,” said veterinarian and AAVMC Executive Director Andrew Maccabe. “The convenience and accessibility that VMCAS participation provides is one of the prime benefits of AAVMC membership.  We welcome St. George’s to the VMCAS community,”

This year’s VMCAS application cycle launches on June 7.
