University College Dublin

University College Dublin School of Veterinary Medicine

The school, the only one on the Island of Ireland providing veterinary education, is the direct descendent of the Royal Veterinary College of Ireland, founded in 1900, in the spirit of the Edinburgh and London Colleges. For some time, two major Universities in Dublin, University College Dublin and Trinity College Dublin, offered veterinary degree programmes, from facilities on the original site of the Veterinary College in Ballsbridge, South Dublin. In 1977, University College Dublin formally assumed sole responsibility for the veterinary school.

In 2002, the School moved from its cramped facilities in Ballsbridge to new, purpose-designed premises, encompassing a Veterinary Sciences Centre and Veterinary Hospital, on the main campus of Ireland’s largest University, UCD, at Belfield. This move set the scene for a revitalization of veterinary education and research programmes, new international linkages, and a period of rapid development. The presence of the School on the main University Campus provides an exciting and dynamic environment for a great student experience, interdisciplinary activity in both research and education with other UCD Schools (including Medicine, Agriculture, Social Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Chemistry). Today, the UCD School enjoys a high profile internally, nationally, and internationally, and attracts Faculty and Students from around the Globe.
