Patricia M. Lowrie Diversity Leadership Scholarship
About the Scholarship
The Patricia M Lowrie Diversity Leadership Scholarship recognizes veterinary students who have demonstrated exemplary promise as future leaders and have made significant contributions to enhancing diversity and inclusion in academic veterinary medicine.
The scholarship honors individuals who have consistently championed efforts to address inequities and under representation in the veterinary profession, have advocated for social justice, and have advanced initiatives to value diversity and inclusion within US colleges of veterinary medicine. Plans are to award each scholarship biennially in the form of a one-time, $6,000 payment.
Eligibility
Veterinary students must:
• Be a current second-, third-, or fourth-year student in good academic and professional standing at one of the 28 accredited American colleges/schools of veterinary medicine;
• Have a demonstrated record of contributing to enhancing diversity and inclusion through course projects, co-curricular activities, outreach, domestic and community
engagement, research, and/or developed an early reputation for influencing others to be inclusive.
Submission Application Process
The following materials must be submitted for an application to be considered:
1. A completed scholarship application.
2. A personal statement indicating how you meet the eligibility criteria (not to exceed three double spaced pages).
3. Three support letters from individuals who can directly speak to the student’s active commitment to diversity and eligibility to receive this award. Letters should also provide first-hand interpretations of the candidate’s leadership qualities and professional behavior. At least one letter must be authored by an administrator or faculty member from your home institution. Letters should be submitted in sealed envelopes by the authors.
4. A copy of your resume or curriculum vitae.
5. A current copy of your unofficial transcript.
6. A current copy of your FAFSA Student Aid Report or your financial aid award letter from your institution.
Scholarship applications will be primarily evaluated on the student’s documentation of a demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity in academic veterinary medicine through contributions that may be felt in any area--college, local area or region, state and/or national arenas. Consideration will also be given to academic achievement, financial need and the student’s broader community service record. Students should submit all documentation to the AAVMC Diversity Committee by 5pm, January 9, 2013. Only complete application packets will be considered.

The Award
Recipients of the scholarship will be invited attend and receive their awards at the Iverson Bell Symposium held in Alexandria, VA, March 7-10, 2013. Student travel and lodging to the meeting will be covered as a part of the scholarship award.
Due to the number of applications, award notification will now be made in mid-February 2013.
